Australia has launched its first national autism strategy and action plan but some say it doesn’t go far enough to improve inclusion and engagement. While People with Disability Australia has welcomed the strategy, there are concerns about whether children with autism could fall through the cracks.

Autism is not confined by borders; it is a global concern that affects individuals worldwide, irrespective of their location or societal context. On January 21, 2008, the United Nations adopted Resolution 62/139 during its Agenda item 66(a) through the General Assembly. This resolution, proposed on December 18, 2007, and based on the report of the Third Committee (A/62/435), designated World Autism Awareness Day.

Public consultations on the development of the National Autism Strategy are underway and meetings will be held in Melbourne and Ballarat in the first week of October. There will also be online workshops and forums on 9 and 12 October. The consultations will continue until 30 October.
