CALD and Ethnic Disabled: Foundational Supports

NEDA LogoThe 2023 NDIS Review introduced “foundational supports” to bridge gaps between NDIS-funded and mainstream services. Ongoing consultations are seeking community input on the structure and role of these supports. You can join a survey on Foundational Supports by the National Ethnic Disability Alliance, to share how foundational supports would improve your life as a CALD person with disability, family member, or carer. It is important that disabled people and children from CALD communities have their say in how they can be best supported.

Qantas agrees to change assistance dog processes after being sued for disability discrimination

Assistance dogs and air travel

Qantas has agreed to change and clarify its application processes for assistance dogs after being sued for disability discrimination.

Sydney woman Rachael Fullerton took Qantas to the Federal Court in October last year, alleging discrimination and seeking a change to the airline’s policies, after it refused to let her assistance dog Strike travel with her.

Named and shamed: NDIS Commission releases list of banned providers

NDIS Providers banned

Providers and disability support workers issued with banning orders have been named in the NDIS Commission’s recently updated list

Banning orders issued by the NDIS Commission vary in terms of length and what services an affected provider or worker can provide to people with disability

NDIS Minister Bill Shorten highlighted the positive impact of possible changes to the NDIS legislation expected for NDIS participants and people with disability in Australia

NDIS Reform clarifies End-of-Life Care

Palliative Care AustraliaPeople living with disabilities at the end of life now have more clarity around who provides the care and supports central to their quality of life. Palliative Care Australia has obtained clarification from the NDIS Reform Act about responsibility for specialist clinical palliative care services and functional disability support.

Women of Colour in Australian Workplaces

Women of Colour in Australian WorkplacesWomen of Colour Australia published its ‘Women of Colour in Australian Workplaces’ report last week which surveyed more than 1000 women of colour across the country. The longitudinal research report found that more than two-thirds of respondents have experienced workplace discrimination, a 10% increase since 2021. More than 40% also said they did not or were unsure about how to report and address the discrimination they experienced.

NDIA Taskforce takes NDIS fraudsters to court

National Disability Insurance Agency Fraud TaskforceThe National Disability Insurance Agency Taskforce has revealed more ‘dodgy’ NDIS providers will be sentenced, however, the Disability Support Guide is available to help people with disability find providers suitable to their needs. The NDIA’s Crack Down on Fraud program has resulted in more than $75 million dollars in halted payments since July 2024 to NDIS providers.
