Participant plans

A participant’s NDIS plan sets our their goals, and the supports to help them pursue those goals. It is important that providers understand and discuss with participants how the supports provided will assist them to achieve their goals and align with the budgets available in the plan.

All supports delivered need to align with the participant’s plan goals and available budget.

NDIA planners, NDIS partners (Early Childhood or Local Area Coordinators), or Support Coordinators can help participants to:

  • understand the plan and what supports and services can be purchased with NDIS funding
  • learn what is the responsibility of other services such as the health or education system
  • connect with community and other government services
  • find providers
  • assist with questions, concerns or changes in circumstances
  • put service agreements in place with providers.

Common questions and recurring themes

Consent
It is an obligation to respect the participant’s choice to share all (or parts) of their NDIS plan or any other personal information. To enquire about a participant, providers must have consent from the participant or their authorised representative. NDIA accepts written or verbal consent.

Participant centric practice
Services provided must align with a participant’s plan, their plan goals, desired outcomes, disability related needs and plan budget as described in their plan. Providers should ensure they are clear on how the participant intends to fund and pay for the supports prior to the supports being delivered.

Delivery of supports
Supports and services should be arranged using the participant’s NDIS budget as directed by the participant. All requests for supports and services must be in line with the participant’s plan, goals, and approved budget. The participant or the person managing their plan needs to make sure there are enough funds before they buy and claim for supports.

As per any commercial transaction, have a clear understanding of how the person seeking supports intends to pay for it, before delivering supports. Only recommend and provide supports and services that are appropriate to the needs of the participant. Avoid claiming for services outside or above the approved plan and related budget, which may constitute ‘sharp practice’ and non-compliance.

Pathways for assistance
If a participant’s situation has changed, it is important they let us know as soon as possible. The participant, or their authorised representative can submit a Change of details or change of situation form.

You can email enquiries@ndis.gov.au or use our online feedback form to share feedback.

Please note that all enquiries must be first raised via the National Contact Centre (1800 800 110) or have a payment enquiry submitted prior to being escalated.
