Common questions about privacy.
(Participant) What is the NDIA’s Privacy Policy about?
(Sara) Hi,I’m Sara. I’d be happy to tell you all about the privacy policy.
Just so you know the National Disability Insurance Agency – or NDIA is the Australian Government agency that delivers the National Disability Insurance Scheme – known as the NDIS.
The NDIS supports people with a significant and permanent disability, along with their families and carers.
The NDIA’s privacy policy will tell you:
• what the NDIA know about you
• why they know things about you
• how they will use what they know
• how you can change what they know, and
• how to make a complaint.
(Participant) When I apply to the NDIS, what kind of information do I need to provide?
(Sara) When you send in your application for the NDIS, they might ask you to provide documents and information about:
• your name
• where you live
• your date of birth, or
• your health or disability information.
All of this is classed as ‘personal information’ and there’s laws about keeping it private.

(Participant) Can anyone involved in the NDIS see my personal information?
(Sara) No, the NDIA will only share your information with staff who need it to do their job. The NDIA will not tell anyone about your personal information unless you agree or if the law says they can or must tell someone. For example, your information will be shared with your NDIS provider when you agree.
All your information will be stored in the NDIA system so it is secure. You don’t have to give the NDIA all your personal information, but without it, they might not be able to give you supports you need or a NDIS plan.
(Participant) I talk to my disability service provider about my disability – not the NDIA. How does the NDIA get personal information?
(Sara) The NDIA gets personal information from:
• you, or
• someone who helps you with the NDIS.
For example:
• a carer
• disability service providers
• other government departments
You can give consent for other people to give the NDIA your information. Consent means you say yes.
The NDIA might also find out your personal information if you tell them using the NDIA’s
• website
• portals, or
• social media.
They can also see what pages people look at on the NDIS website.
Any information you give to the NDIA by email or online will go to them.
(Participant) How does the NDIA use my personal information?
(Sara) The NDIA uses personal information to
• give you services
• manage the NDIS
• contact you
Sometimes they will tell other people about you because they:
• help with your NDIS plan, or
• give you supports you need
I hope that helps you understand privacy and the NDIS! If you have feedback or a complaint you can call 1800 800 110 weekdays 8am to 8pm or email privacy@ndis.gov.au .
And, don’t forget to be careful with your personal information! If you think you spoke to someone who is not from the NDIS do not tell them your personal information, and email feedback@ndis.gov.au or call 1800 800 110.
If you need help to contact the NDIA, you can call 1800 555 727 for help with accessibility.
