‘Make Safe Decisions Around Water’ campaign highlights five key messages to keep our multicultural and multilingual communities safe in and around water. Developed in collaboration with community leaders and advisors, the campaign promotes safety while swimming, boating, and fishing. The Royal Lifesaving Society helps with advice.
Australia’s population is growing, both in numbers and also the diversity of our people.
Our diversity includes people from migrant refugee backgrounds, international students and overseas tourists. We want our diverse communities to enjoy and make the most of Australia’s beautiful waterways safely.
Royal Life Saving is committed to supporting our diverse communities with water safety and swimming education that is culturally appropriate and accessible. We have developed resources in consultation and collaboration with different multicultural communities and leaders.

“Make safe decisions around water” Safety Campaign
Last summer, 134 people drowned across Australia. People from multicultural communities accounted for 27% of all drowning deaths, and 39% were people aged 55 and over. The summer months of December and January saw the highest number of incidents.
Rivers remain the leading location for drowning, yet they receive far less attention compared to beaches. Lakes, swimming pools, and other inland waterways are also high-risk locations.
It’s important to remember that drowning can happen to anyone, regardless of swimming ability, and often occurs when it’s least expected.
- Always plan ahead, check weather and water conditions, and stay safe around water. Please remember to:
- Never go alone in the water – always have a buddy.
- Always wear a lifejacket when boating, fishing, or paddling.
- Don’t drink alcohol when you go swimming, boating, or fishing.
- Supervise children closely around all water, including pools, rivers, popular swim spots
